Ranjan Dey, chef and owner of San Francisco’s New Delhi Restaurant and Bar started his career in India. He continued it in Hong Kong, opening three New Delhi restaurants in the 80s before embarking on the next chapter in his story. Dey traveled on to Honolulu, Chicago and New York before returning to California for a look at San Diego and Los Angeles while doing a feasibility study for the first New Delhi Restaurant in the United States.
San Francisco was an instant hit for its beauty, its people, its culture, its history, its international outlook. Thus, New Delhi Restaurant was launched at 160 Ellis Street in San Francisco, where they’ve been pleased to serve travelers and residents from this location for over 25 years.
Among those guests, President Bill Clinton and chef Julia Child made their way here. Today, the second generation brings a fusion of California cuisine and Indian tradition to the kitchen.

More than a dozen plush stools can be pulled up to the well-stocked bar open until 2 a.m. seven nights week. Proprietor-Chef Dey is the first to acknowledge that the menu at New Delhi is an extensive one. He understands if you’re having trouble deciding, but the staff are well informed and happy to assist. They’ve also created a Chef's Tasting Menu with a fun variety of delicious dishes in either vegetarian or non-vegetarian versions.
Consider the traditional starters, including mixed vegetable pakoras, papadum and tasty samosas. Tandoori specialties are prawn, lamb, fish and chicken done three traditional ways. Curries range from masala and mild korma to Madras and vindaloo. Nan hot from the oven goes with everything.
